Dominique Malonga’s potential for a first WNBA dunk was not about if it would happen, but when. She seized her chance during Saturday night’s All-Star Game.
The Seattle Storm center made the most of the game, dunking in the second quarter. Malonga, standing at 6-foot-6, received a pass from Atlanta Dream star Angel Reese and dunked successfully. This achievement made her the seventh player to dunk in the history of WNBA All-Star Games.
According to the WNBA, the 20-year-old Malonga is the youngest player to accomplish this feat in the annual event. She follows Sylvia Fowles, who last recorded a slam in the 2022 All-Star Game.
Malonga, a member of Team Coop, executed the dunk against Team Spoon on July 25 at the United Center in Chicago. This marked another milestone since her draft as the second overall pick. Malonga’s dunking skills have been evident since her debut practice with Seattle, as she has consistently shown her ability above the rim.
Though she is yet to dunk in the regular season after 63 games with the Storm, Malonga has achieved dunks while playing in Europe and in Unrivaled competitions.
Her teammate, Flau’jae Johnson, humorously stated she would stop talking to Malonga if she failed to dunk in the game on Saturday. Currently, Malonga averages 16.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in her sophomore WNBA season.
