Drone with Explosives Found at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany

Authorities discovered a drone carrying explosives at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport. A forensic technician, alongside a bomb-disposal robot, managed to defuse the device on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. This incident represents a “new quality of danger,” according to Germany’s top security official.

The airport, known as a major freight hub, had both its runways closed. As a result, several flights, including a passenger plane, were redirected after a flying object was detected near the airport shortly before midnight on Tuesday. An anti-explosives robot was deployed to investigate the object near the south runway.

Regional police and prosecutors reported that an airport employee found a drone near the south runway with an “unknown explosive device.” Police examined the object and removed its detonator, indicating this was a new threat scenario, as drones with explosives at airports pose a significant risk.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, who interrupted his vacation to address the situation, described the incident as involving “a hybrid attack scenario.” He did not provide further details but mentioned that questions about the explosives, the drone’s origin, and those responsible are part of an ongoing investigation.

Armin Schuster, regional interior minister of Saxony, noted that authorities are searching for components of a possible second drone. The police and prosecutors said that an apparent second flying object collided with a freight airplane after it aborted a landing at Leipzig/Halle due to the runway’s closure. This plane was diverted to Hannover, about 200 kilometers to the northwest, where only slight damage was found.

The north runway at the airport reopened after approximately two hours. The south runway was already scheduled for maintenance on Wednesday. Authorities confirmed that passengers and airport employees were not in danger, and flights proceeded without disruption during the day.

Photos showed police technicians with an explosives-disposal robot near a Ukrainian plane. The airport is a prominent cargo hub, servicing various aircraft, including Ukrainian Antonov transport planes. Although NATO acknowledged the situation, inquiries were directed to German authorities.

In 2024, an incident at the same airport involved an incendiary device igniting a freight container, which Western security officials suspect was orchestrated by Russian intelligence. Since the extensive invasion of Ukraine over four years ago, Western officials have accused Russia and its allies of conducting numerous attacks and other incidents throughout Europe.
