More than 25 years after its debut, Universal Orlando’s Lost Continent is starting a phased closure at Islands of Adventure. Demolition has commenced in the aging area. Local news footage revealed an excavator set beside a rubble pile, as various reports have confirmed.
“In the months ahead, venues and experiences within Lost Continent will permanently close in phases to pave the way for a new themed area,” stated a Universal Orlando spokesperson to Fox News Digital. The phased closure includes the notable Mythos Restaurant, scheduled to close in 2027.
“This will include the closure of Mythos Restaurant in 2027,” the statement noted.
The Lost Continent, which debuted with Islands of Adventure in 1999, was instrumental in shaping the park’s initial identity. It featured mythology-inspired designs, grand stone facades, and elaborate storytelling steeped in ancient myths.
For years, it remained one of the resort’s most atmospheric lands, delivering a blend of fantasy adventure, advanced effects, and live entertainment. Fan-favorite attractions were also set in this area.
The Dueling Dragons coasters, later renamed Dragon Challenge during The Wizarding World of Harry Potter expansion, showcased iconic intertwined layouts and near-miss elements. However, these coasters closed in 2017 for Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, which quickly rose in popularity.
Another signature feature was Poseidon’s Fury, famed for its dramatic water tunnel effects, bursts of flame, and live performances. However, Universal gradually dismantled the land over the last 15 years.
The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad show concluded in 2018, and Poseidon’s Fury closed in 2023. Mythos Restaurant is expected to operate until 2027 as part of Universal Orlando’s closure strategy.
Universal also announced a temporary closure for the Horror Make-Up Show at Universal Studios Florida to prepare for a “reimagined experience.” This updated production aims to blend classic and modern horror themes with some unexpected surprises.
Hogwarts Castle at Islands of Adventure has undergone continual maintenance and refurbishment, according to Orlando Informer. Looking forward, Universal Orlando plans to launch Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift in 2027, a roller coaster inspired by the hit film series.
Visitor reactions to the demolition have been mixed. While some welcome the changes, others lament the loss of the Lost Continent.
“Glad it’s finally happening because it’s needed it. I mean, the two attractions have been closed for 8 years and 3 years,” said a Reddit user.
“Goodbye, Lost Continent, you will always be my favorite show,” shared a TikTok user.
