An increasing number of school districts have started their academic calendars in July or August. This change leads to a greater chance that students will experience hot weather during their school activities.

Reporters Allison Poulos and Jennifer Vanos from The Conversation highlight conditions in Phoenix, where temperatures reached 117 degrees Fahrenheit (47 degrees Celsius) in July 2026. Children in the area faced these extreme temperatures as they walked to school, enjoyed recess, and participated in baseball practice.
