Powerful Quakes Strike Venezuela

Central Venezuela faced a grave day with two major earthquakes striking on Wednesday. The United States Geological Survey reported the events and cautioned that significant damage and casualties were likely.

Residents experienced strong tremors, leading to disrupted power in many areas, including the capital city, Caracas. Images circulating online showcased severe destruction, with some buildings crumbling completely. However, details on casualties remain unclear.

Current Economic Challenges

Despite holding some of the largest oil reserves globally, Venezuela’s oil industry struggles under outdated infrastructure and U.S. sanctions. Coupled with the burden of hyperinflation, these issues intensify the country’s vulnerabilities.

The arrest of former leader Nicolás Maduro by the U.S. military in January has also contributed to the nation’s turbulent political climate.
