A new statement calls on policymakers to swiftly address the potential disruptions posed by artificial intelligence (A.I.).
Jack Clark, a co-founder of Anthropic, along with a coalition of economists and researchers, warns that A.I. could reshape the economy faster than any previous technology. They emphasize the need for immediate response and understanding.
In a statement released recently, nearly 200 stakeholders, including 15 Nobel laureates and leading economists from A.I. labs such as Open AI and Anthropic, express their concerns. Notable signatories include Jack Clark himself, Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, and venture capitalist Vinod Khosla.
The coalition highlights that A.I.’s power may grow significantly in the next decade. While it presents opportunities for improved living standards, it also poses risks like substantial job displacement.
Tech industry leaders have long cautioned that A.I. could quickly replace human jobs, causing widespread unemployment. Traditionally, economists have viewed these predictions with skepticism, noting that technological changes often unfold gradually. However, some economists now worry that A.I. is permeating the economy more rapidly and extensively compared to previous technologies.
The recently released statement indicates growing awareness of these concerns, likening the potential impact of A.I. to the Industrial Revolution but with a much quicker pace.
