Ed Sheeran began his solo concert in Philadelphia by speaking out about the Gaza crisis, labeling it as ‘catastrophic and unjustifiable.’ He expressed a desire for his music to represent unity and humanity rather than politics.
Sheeran addressed the support acts’ withdrawal following Macklemore’s removal from the tour after making pro-Palestinian statements. Sheeran called the situation a humanitarian issue and shared his feelings about both the events in Israel at the Nova Music Festival and the crisis in Gaza.
Sheeran emphasized the catastrophic devastation and loss of civilian lives, particularly children, occurring in Gaza. He also pointed to systemic injustices in the West Bank.
Sheeran’s Loop Tour generally features solo performances, occasionally joined by the Irish folk band Beoga. Due to the controversy, Macklemore was replaced by Danish band Lukas Graham and Irish singer Aaron Rowe, who later backed out. Finneas, set to join Sheeran in South America, also withdrew.
Addressing the crowd, Sheeran mentioned conversations across various groups to find ways to support victims of recent events, stating a need for understanding and learning.
Macklemore was removed from the tour after exclaiming ‘Free Palestine’ during a show, a decision attributed to New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, whose company owns Gillette Stadium.
Sheeran expressed concern over venues pre-approving performance content. In response, Macklemore announced a $1 million donation to Palestinian relief efforts, encouraging Kraft to match it. A spokesperson confirmed that Kraft and Sheeran agreed to donate $2 million, though the allocation remains unspecified.
Following Sheeran’s statement, supporting acts withdrew, backing Macklemore. The rapper claimed his removal resulted from Kraft’s influence on Sheeran.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations in Philadelphia sent an open letter questioning the rationale behind Macklemore’s removal, raising concerns about free speech.
Philadelphia police, including Civil Affairs Division members, were on hand to manage protests. Sheeran attempted to mediate between Macklemore, Kraft, and venues, but credited Messina Touring Group as the decision-maker in removing Macklemore.
Both Kraft and Macklemore confirmed donations to organizations aiding Palestinians. Meanwhile, pro-Palestinian demonstrators rallied outside Saturday’s concert venue, urging Sheeran to support Palestinians through action.
Fans faced disruptions, with some adjusting plans due to protests. A portion of attendees expressed disappointment over the absence of opening acts like Macklemore. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel stated that protesters would be allowed to express their rights as long as behavior remained legal, ensuring concert-goers enjoyed the event peacefully.
