Egypt vs Argentina: Controversial Match Ends in Frustration

The match between Egypt and Argentina in the round of 16 of the World Cup ended in unexpected disappointment for Egypt, known as the Pharaohs. Despite leading by two goals, they were defeated 3-2 by Argentina’s last-minute comeback led by Lionel Messi.

As the game approached its conclusion, Egypt’s coach, Hossam Hassan, expressed outrage over the refereeing decisions. A red card was issued to Egypt’s goalkeeping coach, Saafan Elsaghir, amid protests against the French referee Francois Letexier. Several yellow cards followed as Egypt protested Argentina’s third goal.

“We have been treated unfairly today,”

Hossam declared that unfair treatment benefited Messi and Argentina in their pursuit of another title. He further accused the soccer establishment of bias during the match.

Hassan also mentioned the overturned goal for Egypt, erased by a video review due to a foul detected at the start of the play. Despite this, Egypt managed to score through Mostafa Zico in the 67th minute, taking a 2-0 lead. Argentina’s formidable comeback included Cristian Romero’s goal in the 79th minute, Messi’s equalizer, and Enzo Fernández’s decisive shot during stoppage time.

The Egyptian Football Association questioned the decisions made with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system and released a statement criticizing inconsistencies in key incidents. The organization emphasized the importance of consistency and fairness, which they felt was lacking.

Even retired NFL quarterback Tom Brady compared Argentina’s comeback to his own sporting achievement of overcoming a 28-3 deficit in the Super Bowl. Hassan dismissed Brady’s commentary, remaining focused on what he considered a failure of VAR to check a potential penalty against Salah.

“The effect of this outcome goes way beyond the defeat itself because we haven’t seen neither respect nor fair play,”

Hassan stated, asserting that penalties favoring Egypt were overlooked by VAR.

After Egypt’s promising performance, which included Zico’s goal and hopes of reaching the quarterfinals, Argentina’s last-minute efforts shattered those hopes. La Albiceleste managed another close victory, advancing to the quarterfinals to face Switzerland.

In response to the loss, Hassan announced that he would no longer follow the tournament upon his return, expressing his internal frustration and defiance against the decisions made.

The incident left the Egyptian team and Hassan with bitter feelings about the tournament’s officiating and outcome.

Argentina now moves on to the quarterfinals against Switzerland, leaving Egypt to reflect on their defeat.
