Egypt’s World Cup Coach Shows Solidarity with Palestinians

49 minutes ago 0

Egyptian soccer coach, Hossam Hassan, displayed a Palestinian flag on the field following his team’s win over Australia at the World Cup. This act was intended to express support for both Egyptians and Palestinians. He stated, “My heart and soul are with them,” during an emotional interview after the game.

In their first success in the knockout stage of the World Cup, Egypt triumphed over Australia with a 4-2 victory on penalty kicks, following a 1-1 draw in the round of 32. This match marks Egypt’s fourth participation in the World Cup. A video capturing Hassan waving the Palestinian flag while spectators chanted “Free, free Palestine!” has gained significant attention on social media.

Yahia Qalash, the former head of Egypt’s Journalists’ Union, highlighted the importance of Hassan’s action, calling it a poignant moment. The situation for more than two million Palestinians in Gaza remains dire. Many face displacement and ruin due to the conflict that started when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. Israel’s subsequent retaliation has resulted in the deaths of 73,066 Palestinians, as reported by Gaza’s Health Ministry. These events have sparked global pro-Palestinian protests, with some athletes also voicing their support.

Earlier in the year, Lamine Yamal, a player during the Spanish league title celebrations, also raised a Palestinian flag. This action led to criticism from Israel’s defense minister, who stated that Yamal’s display “incites hate.”

Hossam Hassan, known for his popularity in the 1980s and 1990s, is not associated with any political or religious affiliations. He dedicated the recent game to the “good and noble” people of Egypt and Palestine.

When questioned about the Palestinian flag, FIFA confirmed that displaying it at the World Cup is allowed. They clarified that flags representing all 211 FIFA Member Associations are permitted at FIFA events under specific regulations and the FIFA Stadium Code of Conduct. The Palestine Football Association is among FIFA’s member organizations.

FIFA has a history of regulating political expressions on the field. During the 2022 Qatar World Cup, some European teams were banned from wearing armbands supporting the “One Love” anti-discrimination campaign. In a separate incident, Iranian Americans in Los Angeles attempted to showcase Iran’s pre-revolutionary flag at World Cup matches, challenging a FIFA prohibition, but the ban was upheld by the courts.
