Elderly Delivery Driver’s Story Highlights Community’s Support and Challenges

3 days ago 0

Donald Johnson, an 81-year-old delivery driver, became the focus of attention in Texas. His story emerged after a doorbell camera captured him struggling to deliver heavy luggage to a home. Erin Howell, a resident at The Colony, witnessed the struggle and stepped in to learn more about Johnson’s situation.

For the past three years, Johnson worked as an independent contractor delivering lost luggage. He did so to cover medical costs for his wife, Josephine, who is battling cancer. The couple has been married for 57 years, and Johnson continued to work through his wife’s treatment, having difficulty finding other employment.

Howell shared Johnson’s story online, sparking an outpouring of support. Many donated and sent messages to help alleviate his burden. Johnson expressed gratitude, believing the support would allow him to cease working and focus on caring for his wife.

“I think I’m going to be able to stop working, and that’s amazing,” Johnson told FOX 4.

However, the situation shifted when a fundraiser, organized to support Johnson, reached over $700,000 but was removed from GoFundMe. According to Amy Johnson, the couple’s daughter, the donations will not be received due to a “technicality,” with refunds being issued to donors.

GoFundMe stated that their trust and safety team found the fundraiser violated terms of service, though specific details were not disclosed. They emphasize the need for authenticity and transparency in fundraising efforts.

Despite this setback, the Johnson family remains encouraged by the supportive messages and prayers they’ve received. Josephine Johnson noted that this support has given her strength during her cancer battle.
