Elijah Bieniemy, 27, son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, faces legal proceedings after allegedly shooting his mother. Court records indicate that his court appearance will be postponed until a mental health competency evaluation is completed.
Elijah was arrested on Monday, following an incident on Sunday where his mother, Mia, was allegedly shot multiple times at their Ashburn, Virginia home. Authorities charged him with malicious wounding and firearm-related offenses, as reported by Loudon County Sheriff’s Office.
A new court filing reveals that Elijah’s public defender suggested he has significant mental health issues, noting he is currently unable to assist in his defense. The court granted a mental health competency evaluation, necessary before his preliminary hearing, which is scheduled for September 9, days before the Chiefs’ NFL season opener against the Denver Broncos.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an update on Mia Bieniemy’s condition, stating she has improved and is out of the ICU. Eric Bieniemy remains with her during this recovery period. Elijah is being held without bond at the Loudon County Adult Detention Center.
Eric Bieniemy, returning to the Chiefs this offseason, has previously contributed to the team’s triumphs from 2018 to 2022, leading a highly successful offensive strategy. The Chiefs report to their training camp with the full coaching staff as they prepare for the upcoming season.
