Elmo from “Sesame Street” is a beloved character, making it difficult for most to stay mad at him. Yet, Knicks fans recently felt irked with Elmo for staying neutral during the NBA Finals.
Facing criticism, Elmo decided to take a stand. During the USMNT’s game against Australia, the red Muppet expressed his support for Team USA. “Just to be clear, Elmo wants Team USA to win, okay? Elmo loves everybody. Just to be clear. Don’t make this a thing. Thank you,” he stated.
It’s unusual for “Sesame Street” figures to enter public relations crisis mode. Not since questions arose about Bert and Ernie’s living situation has such a situation occurred. Photos by Zach Pagano/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank highlighted Elmo’s challenging week.
In the past, the only frenzy Elmo caused was during the heights of Tickle Me Elmo, when excitement surrounded him. Such intense reactions are rare for the character.
Now, with Elmo aligning himself with USA, there’s hope he will be embraced as a friendly mascot by U.S. fans. Photos by Michael Buckner/Variety via Getty Images showed Elmo and Cookie Monster attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup Opening ceremony in Los Angeles.
Until opinions shift, Elmo seems to be enjoying his support for Team USA.
