Empowering Veterans in the Trucking Industry: A Call for Action

One year ago, a tragic event unfolded on Florida’s Turnpike near Fort Pierce. A truck driver with an illegal commercial driver’s license (CDL) caused the deaths of three Floridians by making an illegal U-turn, leaving a minivan with no escape.

This tragedy highlights a crucial issue: ensuring that all commercial truck drivers, regardless of nationality, meet essential safety requirements. The reckless action of the driver, a foreign national who failed his CDL test multiple times, led to a loss that their families will bear forever.

“If you drive a commercial truck on American highways, you must meet strict, non-negotiable safety requirements.”

To prevent such incidents in the future, we must reconsider who is allowed on our highways. The lax policies in states like California, which issue Non-Domiciled CDLs without thorough checks on work status or language skills, pose a danger to all Americans.

The Freedom Haulers initiative introduced by the Trump administration aims to crack down on unsafe foreign drivers and strengthen the trucking industry by transitioning American veterans into these roles. Veterans, with their discipline, training, and experience, are ideally suited for this work.

This initiative not only focuses on increasing safety standards but also on providing veterans with good-paying jobs. The skills and accountability they acquired in military service make them perfect candidates for the trucking industry, allowing them to bypass redundant testing through existing federal waivers.

Enforcing English proficiency and road safety standards is fundamental. Many foreign nationals on the road fail these requirements, posing significant risks. For instance, a driver involved in a fatal crash in Virginia couldn’t communicate in English, an essential skill for safe operation and interaction with law enforcement.

The Freedom Haulers legislation I am introducing aims to make this program permanent, aligning with federal requirements for commercial drivers. It allows qualified veterans to transition smoothly into the trucking industry, using their benefits for CDL training.

This proposal isn’t anti-immigrant or unfair; it is a common-sense approach to public safety. All commercial drivers should communicate effectively and understand the laws they must follow.

Veterans have already proven their capabilities by operating heavy military vehicles in challenging environments. It’s time we cut bureaucratic red tape and facilitate their entry into the trucking industry instead of compromising safety by lowering standards for foreign drivers.
