Escalating Tensions: U.S. Airstrikes Target Iranian Revolutionary Guard in Response to Troop Fatalities

The U.S. military executed airstrikes targeting Iran’s Revolutionary Guard to retaliate for the killing of American troops in Jordan. This action widens the conflict between the nations after an interim peace deal collapsed. The strikes are part of a week-long operation that involves battles over the control of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has also struck U.S.-allied countries across the Middle East.

The U.S. military has aimed at strategic targets such as bridges, electrical plants, and other critical infrastructure in Iran. In response, Tehran retaliated by attacking power and desalination facilities in Kuwait, affecting daily operations in the oil-rich nation. Iran increased its threats of expanded strikes, prompting warnings from the United Arab Emirates. Kuwait and Bahrain activated air defenses due to Iranian drones and missile threats.

The U.S. Central Command stated its strikes targeted Iranian military coastal surveillance, air defenses, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone storage sites. The objective is to weaken Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz and penalize the Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Footage released showed strikes executed by fighter jets and Tomahawk cruise missiles from sea-based platforms. Target sites included mountainous regions where the Guard often hides military installations including missile bases.

Since the beginning of the conflict, an Iranian attack on a base in Jordan resulted in two American fatalities, one missing, and four wounded. The U.S. military reported 16 service members killed and over 430 wounded so far. Iran stated that at least 50 people died and over 500 were injured due to the latest U.S. strikes.

UAE expresses caution following Iranian threats

Iran targeted nearly every U.S.-allied Gulf state in retaliation, though the UAE remains untouched. The Iranian news agency Fars issued threats against the UAE, suggesting that airports and ports should be evacuated immediately. The UAE Foreign Ministry responded by urging maximum restraint to avoid further instability.

The UAE stressed the targeting of civilian facilities as violations of international law.

Amid the ongoing conflict, both the UAE and Saudi Arabia reportedly executed retaliatory airstrikes against Tehran. The Gulf Cooperation Council accused Iran of war crimes targeting infrastructure and civilian sites.

Strait of Hormuz: Central to ongoing conflict

Amidst threats from former President Trump on targeting Iran’s power stations and bridges, the U.S. executed these plans focusing on Iran’s coastal areas near the Strait. The U.S. naval blockade resumed against Iranian ports to disrupt crude oil shipments, with the military redirecting and disabling them.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei cautioned the U.S. regarding repeated attacks on the Islamic Republic, implying severe consequences. An Iranian negotiator announced the suspension of commitments to the recent interim deal intending to end hostilities.

The Iranian military command warned of a powerful response against perceived U.S. aggression.
