Saratoga, New York ranks among the top summer destinations in the United States. The town offers a vibrant atmosphere with concerts, great dining options, and a lively nightlife. A major attraction is the Saratoga Race Course, fondly known as The Spa, attracting top thoroughbreds, jockeys, and trainers every Saturday during summer.
Saratoga’s summer meet features many exciting events. Whitney Day stands out, highlighted by the prestigious Grade 1 stakes. There are three additional Grade 1 races: the Test Stakes, Fourstardave Stakes, and Saratoga Derby.
After a disappointing experience during Jim Dandy Day, I am preparing for Whitney Day with $125 to risk. Below are my betting strategies for races 9-12 on Saturday, August 8.
Saratoga Race Course Betting Strategies for ‘Whitney Day’
Test Stakes, Race 9
I am placing a $20 win bet on #6 On Time Girl. With the best jockey-trainer combination, Irad Ortiz and Brad Cox, On Time Girl has impressive stats. Ortiz is noted for frequent wins during the Saratoga summer meet, holding the highest winning rate among jockeys. Similarly, Cox leads among trainers based on victories.
On Time Girl has a prominent record, with two victories and a second-place finish at this specific distance. Her versatility, showcased through tactical speed, ensures competitiveness regardless of pace.
Fourstardave Stakes, Race 10
#3 Zulu Kingdom, priced at 7-2, is a strong contender, often favored in past races. With eight wins and a third-place finish in 11 career races, his record shows consistency. Flavien Prat, Zulu Kingdom’s jockey, and trainer Chad Brown lead the earnings this summer at Saratoga.
Recently achieving his fastest career Beyer Speed Figure (101) in a dead-heat victory at the Grade 3 Kelso, Zulu Kingdom is ready for the challenge. To increase my chances, I’ll place an exacta bet, including #6 Capitol Hill (10-1), known for his late speed.
Saratoga Derby, Race 11
For a $10 across-the-board wager on #1 Glavine, I’m looking at his improved performances. Glavine’s Beyer figures are close to the top speeds in this field, signaling potential. Having broken his maiden earlier this year, Glavine placed fourth and third in his last races at Saratoga.
At odds of 12-1, Glavine offers value better than suggested by the morning line. His odds could lead to rewarding outcomes.
Whitney Stakes, Race 12
#6 Sovereignty, the 2025 Kentucky Derby champion, remains a favorite. Despite less favorable recent performances, his past record at The Spa is strong. Sovereignty’s dominant 10-length victory in the previous Grade 1 Travers, along with a series of high Beyer figures, exemplifies his capabilities.
He has shown improvement, typically excelling in third starts. I am confident placing a $50 win bet on Sovereignty at the current price.
