Execution Date Nears for Convicted Killer of Two Real Estate Agents

2 weeks ago 0

The mother of Lori Brown, one of two real estate agents murdered by Stacey Ian Humphreys, remembers the victims and highlights ongoing safety challenges in the real estate profession. Humphreys, 53, faces execution on Sept. 16 at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison.

Details of the Crime

On Nov. 3, 2003, Lori Brown, 21, and Cyndi Williams, 33, were fatally shot while working from a model-home office inside the Oakwind subdivision in Powder Springs, Georgia. Humphreys held the women at gunpoint, forced them to disrobe, and killed them before fleeing with their ATM cards. There was no evidence of sexual assault.

Ed Greathouse, a retired investigator who assisted the prosecution, stated that investigators could not discern why Humphreys targeted that specific office.

Personal Reflections

Lori Brown’s mother, Linda Brown, a longtime real estate agent, described her daughter’s outgoing personality as ideal for real estate work. “She was a people person from the time she was small,” Linda said. Lori had formed a close friendship with Williams and was planning a wedding with her high school sweetheart.

“Sometimes I think it’s my fault. I should have never let her go in this direction with real estate,” Linda added.

The Arrest and Trial

Humphreys used stolen bank cards to withdraw over $3,000 after the murders. He was arrested on Nov. 8, 2003, after a high-speed chase in Wisconsin, where authorities found the murder weapon and the victims’ blood in vehicles used by Humphreys.

In 2007, he was convicted by a Glynn County jury of two counts of malice murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, and aggravated assault. He confessed to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Execution and Legal Challenges

The state’s plan to execute Humphreys faces legal delays. Linda Brown remains skeptical about his execution occurring after 23 years. Despite prolonged legal proceedings, she supports the death penalty for Humphreys.

“We lost these two girls and endured 4.5 years waiting for a trial,” Linda said.

Safety Awareness

Linda Brown continues promoting safety during National REALTOR® Safety Month each September, aiming to raise awareness about risks faced by real estate professionals.

She avoids situations where she could be trapped by following basic safety principles like not taking clients into secluded areas. “I’m not saying that Lori and Cyndi could have done anything differently. They were vulnerable,” she emphasized.
