On an unusual day in the U.S., three states are preparing for scheduled executions. Lethal injections are planned for inmates in Tennessee, Alabama, and Oklahoma. The last occurrence of three executions on the same day was on January 7, 2010.
Tennessee Execution and Challenges
Tennessee plans to execute Anthony Darrell Hines for the 1985 murder of motel maid Catherine Jean Jenkins. Despite appeals regarding potential issues with the insertion of IV lines due to Hines’ health, the Tennessee Supreme Court has ruled against delaying the execution.
Previously, an execution in Tennessee was halted due to complications with IV insertion for another inmate, leading to a reprieve.
Alabama’s Scheduled Execution
Alabama is set to execute Jeremy Williams by lethal injection for the 2021 rape and murder of 5-year-old Kamarie Holland. Williams admitted guilt and requested the sentence be executed without appeal. This would be Alabama’s first execution of the year.
Kamarie Holland was a vibrant child who loved princesses, and her father recalls her fondness for dressing up. Her mother is serving a sentence for sex trafficking charges related to the case.
Oklahoma’s Execution Plan
In Oklahoma, Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez is scheduled for execution for the 2003 murder of his girlfriend, Olimpia Fisher. Despite expressing regret, Cuesta-Rodriguez’s request for clemency was denied by the state’s Pardon and Parole Board.
Fisher was fatally shot by Cuesta-Rodriguez at their home, and the crime was marked by excessive brutality, as detailed by the Oklahoma Attorney General. Cuesta-Rodriguez’s legal team cited his difficult past and mental health issues without success in seeking clemency.
