Expanding the Impact of the HPV Vaccine

4 days ago 0

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine represents a major public health accomplishment over the last 20 years. Since its introduction, cases of cervical cancer in young women have significantly decreased. However, recent studies indicate that there is potential for even greater benefits.

The HPV vaccine, known by the brand name Gardasil, can also prevent multiple cancers in men. These include oral, throat, and other types of cancers. Despite this potential, many young men have not yet received the vaccine.

Increasing vaccination rates among young men could enhance the public health impact of the HPV vaccine. Broader immunization coverage would considerably reduce cancer cases affecting both genders.
