Exploring the American Dream: A Nationwide Analysis

Last month, as America celebrated its 250th anniversary, Newsweek embarked on a project to evaluate the promise at the heart of the nation. The aim was to pinpoint where this promise is flourishing, where it faces challenges, and where changes occur quietly. Newsweek’s American Dream Index assesses all 33,772 U.S. ZIP codes, scoring them from 0 to 100 over six pillars of opportunity. Importantly, the emphasis is on mobility, measuring if people in these areas can still improve their circumstances.

The Index challenges some common perceptions, showing North Dakota, Utah, and Minnesota as national leaders. In contrast, high housing costs pull down the rankings in some wealthy metropolitan areas. This initiative was highlighted as the cover story of Newsweek’s July 31 issue. Green: “For me, the American Dream meant a happy life shared with family and friends. As a retiree, I hope young Americans, native or immigrant, can enjoy a fulfilling life with opportunities for education and employment.”

Reinhold: “Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ embodies the American Dream as a challenge for all people of goodwill.”

James: “The American Dream once symbolized prosperity through hard work. Despite military service, I’m disabled and don’t feel the Dream is alive, as success now demands a college degree, without guarantees.”

Nicki: “The American Dream persists as a concept, originating from debates. Historically contested, it still exists as a personal and collective aspiration.”

Larry: “A country free from racism and prejudice.”

Ginger: “The Detroit area illustrates the American Dream’s decline for the economically disadvantaged while thriving for the middle and upper classes. The disparity between affluent areas and struggling regions is stark.”

Ron: “The American Dream involved experiencing America’s landmarks and culture. If you appreciate it, you’ve found the Dream.”

Lloyd: “The Dream is hard to measure. For some, opportunity abounds, while others face a grim reality. The disparity is troubling.”

David: “The American Dream embodies life, liberty, and happiness. Despite ups and downs, the idea persists. If it’s lacking where you are, seek it elsewhere.”

Ruby: “The Dream includes freedom in reading, music, affordable healthcare, and education. It’s about fairness and respect.”
