An explosion occurred outside New York City’s 26 Federal Plaza, leading to a fire and significant emergency response on Monday morning. Authorities took one person into custody following the incident near the Lower Manhattan federal building that houses agencies such as the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) reported that four individuals sustained minor injuries. Three did not require medical transport, while one person was taken to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital. The FBI New York Office announced, “This morning an individual deployed an incendiary device outside of 26 Federal Plaza. The individual has been taken into custody, and the FBI New York Office is investigating the incident,” in a statement to Newsweek.

FDNY detailed that they received a call at 8:30 a.m. about an outdoor fire at 26 Federal Plaza, located between Worth Street and Lafayette Street. Two engine companies and two ladder companies responded. By just before 11 a.m., the scene was secured, and no FDNY units remained at the location.

New York City Democratic Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed relief that no severe injuries occurred and confirmed that a suspect was in custody. On X, he stated, “My team is in touch with the NYPD, and we will support the federal investigation. Our administration will continue to ensure that every New Yorker is safe in their city and hold accountable any who threaten that.”

Federal authorities indicated the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating the incident. Officials reported no severe injuries as they worked to ascertain the explosion’s cause.

Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York said, “I am grateful to law enforcement for their swift actions to stop an attack at 26 Federal Plaza this morning, for successfully apprehending the suspect, and for keeping the people of New York City safe. Acts of terror and violence have no place in our City and will never be tolerated. The individual responsible for this must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
