A recent altercation over lounge chairs at a beach in Vouliagmeni, Greece resulted in a tragic loss of life. The incident took place on the morning of September 20 and involved two elderly men, aged 82 and 76, as reported by the Greek newspaper Kathimerini.
The 82-year-old man attempted to reserve chairs for his group, leading to a heated argument with the 76-year-old man. Witnesses reported that the conflict quickly grew violent, with loud shouts echoing across the beach.
During the confrontation, the 82-year-old man suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed. Although he was rushed to a local hospital, he sadly died soon after. The Vouliagmeni police department was contacted for further information, and the 76-year-old was detained and charged with causing fatal bodily harm.
The dispute was centered around six sunbeds. A 21-year-old woman accompanying the younger man was also arrested for verbal abuse and aiding fatal bodily harm. She was released after sustaining facial injuries.
The altercation escalated when the 82-year-old allegedly struck the young woman, prompting retaliation from other beachgoers. Despite CPR and defibrillator efforts, the man was pronounced dead around 11 a.m. at Asklepieion Hospital.
“We saw them beating a man, another man, a woman beating him — and then we see them giving him CPR. And all this for a deck chair,” a witness described the chaos.
Authorities have arranged a postmortem examination to pinpoint the cause of death. Vouliagmeni Beach, close to Athens, attracts large crowds of up to 7,000-8,000 visitors daily, which often leads to congestion and disputes.
The 76-year-old and the 21-year-old are set to testify in court on September 23. This incident highlights ongoing tensions in Greece concerning beach accessibility, with recent government measures aimed at limiting unauthorized sunbed usage on public coastlines.
