Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike has announced her retirement at the end of this season, marking the conclusion of a remarkable 15-year career in the WNBA. The 36-year-old revealed her decision during an interview with Boardroom Talks.

Ogwumike, an eight-time All-WNBA forward, returns to the Sparks this season after spending two years with Seattle. Reflecting on her career, she shared, “I feel very fulfilled with the 15 years that I’ve been able to play and compete at such a high level.”

Drafted as the No. 1 pick in 2012 from Stanford, Ogwumike made an immediate impact by earning the Rookie of the Year award with Los Angeles. Her standout season came in 2016 when she led the Sparks to a WNBA championship and was named league MVP.

Former Sparks teammate Alana Beard commented on Ogwumike’s career, stating, “Nneka has always led with a rare combination of strength, purpose, and grace. For 15 seasons, we’ve watched her shine as both an elite competitor and as a leader who elevated the league and those around her.”

This year, Ogwumike earned her 11th All-Star selection while averaging nearly 17 points per game. On her decision to retire, she mentioned, “I still feel very good physically, but there’s a comfort in slowing down a little. I feel proud of what I’ve accomplished.”

In addition to her achievements on the court, Ogwumike has also made significant contributions to women’s basketball through her leadership. She served as president of the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) and played a crucial role in negotiating a transformative collective bargaining agreement earlier this year.

Terri Carmichael Jackson, WNBPA executive director, praised Ogwumike’s leadership. “She has served this union with unparalleled commitment, courage, integrity, and purpose. Nneka understood leadership as using her position to advance the game and its business for every player, today and in the future.”
