A police officer in Madison, Wisconsin, shot and killed a man following an altercation on Wednesday. The incident has led to large-scale protests at the state Capitol. Cellphone footage, capturing the sound of three gunshots, has gained widespread attention on social media. Observers in the video can be seen at a stopped intersection, witnessing the event.
Madison Police Chief John Patterson revealed at a news conference that the deceased was a man in his 30s. His identity was not officially released, although protest speakers named him as Corey Ruiz, as reported by the Wisconsin Examiner. Similarly, the outlet Wisconsin Right Now identified Ruiz based on two unnamed sources.
Patterson emphasized that the video circulating online is limited in perspective, suggesting it does not capture the entire sequence of events.
Incident Details
The police responded to a call shortly before 1 p.m. regarding a person allegedly trying to enter parked cars in the area. Officers located the man and attempted an approach, but he fled on a bicycle through nearby backyards.
Officers found the individual at Baldwin and Williamson streets around 1:30 p.m. It remains unclear if he fell from the bicycle or if officers intervened. A struggle ensued, during which the man reportedly stabbed an officer with a knife. Attempts to subdue him with a Taser failed. Consequently, the injured officer fired his weapon, and the man succumbed to his injuries at a hospital later. The police department included an image of the knife in a press release.
Patterson described the officer involved as a veteran but did not disclose further information about either individual.
Community Reaction
Black advocacy groups in Madison report that the deceased was Black. Brandi Grayson, head of Urban Triage, stated, “Today, Madison police shot a Black man three times at close range while he was experiencing a mental health crisis.” She criticized the police for handcuffing the man postmortem.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation will conduct an independent inquiry due to police involvement. All four officers involved will be on administrative leave in alignment with departmental policy.
