Father Overcomes Heart Attack to Walk Daughter Down the Aisle

Tests confirmed a heart attack, requiring immediate transfer by helicopter to the main campus of Cleveland Clinic, where doctors identified severe coronary blockages necessitating open-heart surgery.

As the surgical team, led by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Faisal Bakaeen, prepared for the operation, Nelson expressed his heartfelt wish to attend his daughter Rachel’s wedding. “My daughter is getting married Saturday. I have to be there,” he insisted.

Following a successful quadruple bypass, Nelson started his recovery in the ICU. Initially, he planned to see his daughter in her wedding dress at the hospital, but this grew into a larger event. Teams across the hospital collaborated to transfer the wedding to the hospital’s rooftop, ensuring Nelson could participate.

On June 6, with his care team’s assistance, Nelson exchanged his hospital gown for a suit and stood ready to fulfill his promise. Nearly 80 family and friends gathered on the rooftop. Caregivers lined the path as Nelson, still healing from surgery, proudly walked his daughter to her future husband, Dana Schultz.
