The FBI is examining if illegal drugs were present in a van during an incident in Houston where immigration agents killed the driver. A search warrant application, signed by a federal judge, outlined the search for controlled substances. Photographs of small bags found inside the white Ford Transit cargo van were included.
The van’s driver, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, was on his way to a construction job on July 7 with three passengers. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents began following the van, eventually resulting in an agent shooting Mr. Salgado Araujo, killing him.
Special Agent David McNeilly of the FBI stated that the United States is gathering all facts about the incident, focusing on the reason for the vehicle occupants fleeing. A Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman confirmed that Mr. Salgado Araujo and the other passengers were not the intended targets of the immigration enforcement action, which had been directed at another individual.
Drugs were not the reason ICE agents pursued the van, and there is no indication that agents suspected drugs were present. Additionally, no previous evidence suggests that Mr. Salgado Araujo or the van’s passengers had any involvement with drugs or a criminal history.
