FBI Returns Fugitive Charged with Murder to U.S.

A Mexican man, Arnoldo Jimenez, has been returned to the United States after evading capture for more than a decade. Jimenez was arrested in Mexico last year for allegedly murdering his wife on their wedding night in Illinois. The FBI confirmed his return on Thursday.

Jimenez was apprehended in Monterrey, Mexico, on January 30, 2025, through a collaborative effort between Mexican authorities and U.S. law enforcement. He had been on the FBI’s Most Wanted list as the fourth-most wanted fugitive in the United States at the time of his arrest.

The FBI in Chicago marked the occasion as a significant achievement. “No matter how much time has passed or where a criminal may be in the world, the FBI will never stop in our pursuit of justice,” the agency stated in a post on X.

Background of the Case

Jimenez is accused of killing his wife, Estrella Carrera, age 26, on their wedding night. Her body was discovered in the bathtub of her apartment in Burbank, Illinois, just two days after the couple married, on May 13, 2012. Jimenez was charged with first-degree murder, and a state warrant for his arrest was issued on May 15, 2012. He was later charged at the federal level for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

Authorities have not released details regarding the motive behind the killing. A date for Jimenez’s first court appearance in the United States is yet to be announced.
