A federal judge overturned a Trump administration policy that hindered immigration for people from numerous countries. Chief Judge John McConnell Jr. criticized the policy for creating uncertainty for immigrants in the U.S. He accused the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) of overstepping its authority and ignoring legal requirements.
The policy affected immigrants from 39 countries by halting decisions on asylum, work permits, green cards, and citizenship. Judge McConnell described these actions as contrary to law and unreasonable. The Homeland Security Department did not comment immediately.
Skye Perryman of Democracy Forward emphasized the ruling confirmed that the federal government must not discriminate based on nationality. This policy has hurt families and workers, leaving them uncertain and unable to proceed with their lives.
The ruling broadly impacts all pending USCIS cases involving individuals from affected countries. Shev Dalal-Dheini of the American Immigration Lawyers Association highlighted it as a legal victory ensuring USCIS adheres to its responsibility.
The Trump administration initially suggested expanding restrictions after an Afghan national was involved in a shooting incident. However, Jamal Abdi of the National Iranian American Council welcomed the ruling, highlighting the importance of lawful immigration pathways.
Shawn VanDiver, leading Afghan resettlement efforts, praised this as a win for legal principles. He shared stories of affected individuals facing job insecurity and delayed life plans due to unresolved immigration applications.
