An Italian tourist died and several were injured after a fire broke out in the Dominican Republic’s resort town of Bayahibe on Friday. The deceased, 46-year-old Italian national Francesca Valentino, passed away at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel, according to the Dominican Republic’s Directorate of Out-of-Hospital Emergency Services (DAEH).
At least nine individuals received medical attention for injuries. Three of them were transferred to off-site medical facilities for further treatment, as stated by DAEH.
Authorities evacuated 1,690 guests from the resort town. A video captured by a drone displayed a large fire with smoke rising from beachside buildings, casting shadows over the turquoise waters.
According to Reuters, officials noted that the rapid spread of the fire was due to the flammable palm materials used in the roof structures, coupled with wind conditions. The guests were relocated to nearby hotels, including the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace, which was undamaged.
The Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center (COE) confirmed that tourist activities in Bayahibe and the vicinity remain unaffected and are operating safely.
