Flooding in Nepal and Tibet: Rising Concerns
Authorities in Nepal have raised alerts for further flooding following severe rainfall. Concurrently, China disclosed more information regarding the extensive damage in its Tibet region. Five days after a glacier collapse led to devastating floodwaters, rescuers in Nepal are grappling to access affected areas.
Ferrin Cole, operations director at Crisis Response International, conveyed the magnitude of the destruction to NBC News. “It’s overwhelming. The flood obliterated cities. We are expediting help to those in need,” Cole said.
The State Department reported approximately 100 Americans missing in the regions affected by the flood disaster. Divya Chandrashekar, related to a missing American in Nepal, expressed hope in finding loved ones despite the situation’s severity.
The death toll in Nepal reached 781, with over 2,500 individuals still unaccounted for, including 592 foreigners. The Nepal Tourism Board confirmed the rescue of 289 foreign nationals. On the other side, China reported 16 fatalities and 546 missing persons in Tibet, which includes 261 foreign nationals. The extent of overlap in missing-person counts between the two regions remains uncertain.
