Senate Committee Advances Trump Health Nominees

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) has voted to advance two health nominees from President Trump’s administration for a full Senate vote.

Erica Schwartz is nominated as the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Sean Kaufman for administrator of the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR).

The committee voted along party lines, with Schwartz’s nomination passing 12-10 and Kaufman’s 12-11.

The votes were delayed due to attendance issues. HELP Chair Bill Cassidy emphasized the need for strong leadership due to challenges in public health.

During Kaufman’s hearing, Cassidy acknowledged previous controversial statements from Kaufman about immunization. However, he assured that Kaufman would not influence vaccine policy if confirmed.

Cassidy stated Kaufman’s admission of errors and pledged that he would not decide on mRNA issues.

Bernie Sanders, the HELP Committee’s ranking member, expressed concerns about Schwartz’s ability to confront conspiracy theories propagated by Health and Human Services leadership.

Sanders did not support Schwartz’s nomination, arguing it is crucial for nominees to challenge dangerous theories on vaccines.
