Florida Boater Saves Woman After Alligator Attack

A woman in Florida faced a harrowing situation on the Silver River near Ocala. During a swim, she was attacked by an alligator, which grabbed her right arm and pulled her underwater. Her swift action to defend herself with a paddle proved ineffective.

Nearby, John Gamache and his father were having lunch on their boat when they heard the disturbance. Gamache saw the alligator heading toward the swimmers. He quickly navigated his vessel closer, scaring the alligator away.

When Gamache reached the woman, her injury was severe, with bones visible and blood loss escalating. Recognizing the urgency, he used rope from his boat to secure her injured arm. Meanwhile, his father assisted other swimmers, including children, onto the boat.

They transported the group to a nearby boat launch where emergency responders awaited. The woman was released from the hospital with her right arm lost but with her life saved.

Gamache, who had frequented the Silver Springs area for many years without encountering such incidents, later communicated with the family. He noted their gratitude for his timely intervention.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation officers later found and removed the 9-foot-8-inch alligator, allowing the reopening of the area. This incident occurred shortly after another tragic attack near Orlando where a woman, Brittany Clark, lost her life during an alligator encounter in July.
