Folarin Balogun’s Red Card and Suspension Unappealable, U.S. Soccer Confirms

2 hours ago 0

Forward Folarin Balogun of the U.S. national team received a red card after stepping on Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic’s foot during a World Cup match held at Levi’s Stadium on Wednesday. The red card issued to Balogun during the match, which took place at 9:03 PM local time, means he will be suspended for the American team’s upcoming round of 16 game against Belgium.

U.S. soccer officials confirmed there would be no appeal against Balogun’s red card and the subsequent suspension. This decision aligns with FIFA’s rules for the 2026 World Cup. According to these rules, a sending-off leads to automatic suspension from the following match. Moreover, FIFA’s judicial bodies can impose further suspensions or disciplinary actions.

“A sending-off automatically incurs suspension from the subsequent match. The FIFA judicial bodies may impose additional match suspensions and other disciplinary measures,” the rules state.

The sole scenario where an appeal could be considered is if FIFA’s disciplinary committee opts to extend Balogun’s suspension beyond one game upon reviewing the incident.

Fans and commentators questioned the referee’s decision immediately after the red card was shown. The incident occurred when Balogun collided with Tarik Muharemovic, leading to the latter falling and requiring on-field treatment. Video assistant referee (VAR) technology confirmed the play justified a red card, according to the official’s assessment.

U.S. fans familiar with appeal processes in sports like the NBA and NFL proposed including video evidence in an appeal. They referenced an earlier phase in the tournament where Lionel Messi did not receive discipline for a similar incident. Despite this, the referee’s decision is final unless Balogun faces additional match suspensions.
