The search for the next James Bond has commenced. Alison Papworth, a former Bond girl, offers her perspective on the matter. Papworth, who appeared in “For Your Eyes Only” and “Octopussy” as Roger Moore’s co-star, believes the next 007 should remain male.
She expressed her views to Fox News Digital, mentioning her preference for a male Bond. “If they’re true to the books, I hope it’s a man,” she said. “A man, just a man. Yes, I think it would be very strange if it were a woman. Don’t you? It would be a totally different thing. So I hope it’s another man, another gorgeous man.”
Papworth’s comments surfaced before actor Gary Oldman shared speculations on “The Morning Show.” Oldman mentioned that his “Slow Horses” co-star, Jack Lowden, might be considered for the role of Bond. Although Oldman later clarified that Jack Lowden is among six candidates rumored for the part, no official announcement has been made yet.
Amazon MGM Studios, which gained creative control of the Bond franchise in 2025 with producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, is overseeing the casting process. Denis Villeneuve will direct the upcoming installment, and Steven Knight will handle the screenplay.
The search, announced in May, includes actors like Paul Mescal, Jacob Elordi, and Jack O’Connell as potential candidates for the iconic role. The franchise, over 60 years old, is preparing for its 26th film. Daniel Craig was the last to portray Bond in “No Time to Die.”
Referring to her experiences with Roger Moore, Papworth described him as an “absolute gentleman” known for his humor. She shared some anecdotes from her time on set, including a memorable incident with a stuntman smuggling beef drippings for Moore.
Papworth’s career as a Bond girl brought her unique experiences, such as first-class travel and trying caviar in Rio de Janeiro. However, some moments were less glamorous, such as filming “Octopussy” in freezing conditions at Pinewood Studios.
Despite initially believing that appearing in one Bond film meant the end of such roles, Papworth was surprised to receive a call from Barbara Broccoli to be part of “Octopussy.” Her Bonds films left a significant impact on her life, providing lifelong friendships with fellow actresses like Vanya Seager and Carole Ashby.
After acting and modeling, Papworth transitioned to interior design. She is now a director at Camhall Design & Consultancy, based in the U.K., and has expanded operations across London, New York, Boston, and the Bahamas.
Papworth, along with Joan Collins, raises funds for Shooting Star Children’s Hospices, supporting life-limited children. Reflecting on her career, Papworth remains connected to show business through occasional signings at conventions.
