Former child actor Bobb’e J. Thompson has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison after admitting to possession of a firearm by a felon. This case highlights the challenges some child stars face as they transition into adulthood. Many Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and other child actors have encountered legal issues after achieving early fame.
Bobb’e J. Thompson’s Case
Thompson will serve over two years in prison followed by three years of supervised release. His case is part of a series of legal troubles involving child entertainers who later faced the criminal justice system. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa, Thompson was arrested after being caught driving at 104 mph in a 70 mph zone in September 2025. During the stop, authorities found marijuana and a loaded stolen handgun in the actor’s backpack. He pleaded guilty in April and U.S. District Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced him.
Federal prosecutors noted Thompson’s previous convictions for assault-related offenses and a prior firearm charge. Known for his roles in That’s So Raven and Wild ‘N Out, this gun conviction is his most significant legal issue to date.
Disney Channel Stars Facing Legal Issues
Orlando Brown, who faced numerous arrests related to domestic incidents and narcotics, has openly discussed his struggles with substance abuse. Shia LaBeouf, a star from Even Stevens, has faced several legal controversies, including battery charges. Mitchel Musso, known from Hannah Montana, was arrested for public intoxication. Adam Hicks, from Zeke and Luther, was sentenced for armed robbery but later paroled. Anneliese van der Pol faced DUI-related charges and has spoken about her recovery efforts. Debby Ryan also resolved a DUI case through a plea deal.
Nickelodeon Stars With Legal Problems
Amanda Bynes, remembered for All That and The Amanda Show, faced multiple driving-related charges and mental health challenges. Drake Bell, famous for Drake & Josh, was sentenced for attempting to endanger a child and later spoke about its impact on his life.
Child Movie Stars’ Legal Troubles
Macaulay Culkin, of Home Alone fame, faced a drug-related arrest in 2004 but has kept a relatively low profile. Lindsay Lohan had numerous legal problems between 2007 and 2013. Jake Lloyd, known for playing young Anakin Skywalker, faced a high-speed chase arrest linked to mental health issues. Edward Furlong, from Terminator 2: Judgment Day, had repeated issues with domestic violence and probation violations. Haley Joel Osment faced DUI charges but has since maintained a quieter public life. Tatum O’Neal’s arrest for purchasing crack cocaine highlighted her struggles with addiction.
TV Sitcom Child Stars
Darius McCrary, from Family Matters, faced child-support related legal issues. Todd Bridges, of Diff’rent Strokes, overcame serious drug-related problems and has spoken about recovery. Dana Plato, also from Diff’rent Strokes, was arrested in a robbery case and later died in 1999 from a drug overdose, ruled a suicide. Zachery Ty Bryan, known for Home Improvement, has faced multiple arrests related to domestic violence and assault since 2020.
