Former Iowa Rep. Christina Bohannan’s Voting Record Scrutinized Amid Congressional Campaign

Former Democratic State Representative Christina Bohannan is under scrutiny for her voting record in the Iowa House during her congressional campaign. Records indicate Bohannan missed nearly half of her votes in her final year as she pursued a seat in the competitive district.

In 2022, Bohannan did not participate in 348 out of 773 floor votes, approximately 45% of all votes. This comes despite her earlier emphasis on the necessity for leaders to be present. She is currently running for Congress in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, regarded as a closely contested race according to the Cook Political Report. Republicans are keen to retain their narrow majority in the House of Representatives.

Some of the notable votes Bhannan skipped addressed significant issues such as protections for sexual abuse victims, support for volunteer firefighters and first responders, aspects of Iowa’s dairy industry, agricultural programs, emergency 911 services, and juvenile justice reform.

The absences contrast with Bohannan’s previous statements. In a 2025 social media post, she expressed her dedication to speaking directly with voters, underlining the importance of presence amidst uncertainty.

Previously, in a 2021 interview, Bohannan had indicated a commitment to balancing legislative work with her congressional campaign efforts. She served a single term in the Iowa House from 2021 to 2023 before commencing her congressional pursuits.

Bohannan is contesting incumbent Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, R-Iowa, in the 1st Congressional District for the third time, having narrowly lost past races.

Despite campaigning, Bohannan continued receiving her legislative salary, recorded as $25,000 annually plus per diem. Her past remarks and middle-class campaign messaging have faced mounting criticism. Bohannan, while promoting herself as a middle-class advocate, owns significant assets, including a Sarasota, Florida, condo and a million-dollar home in Iowa City.
