Former Jockey Robby Albarado Dies at 52

Robby Albarado, a renowned jockey who celebrated two victories in the Preakness Stakes during his extensive career, has passed away at the age of 52. Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, confirmed his death, informed by several of his friends and family.

Albarado recently underwent a medical procedure to place a stent due to a blockage near his heart. This was confirmed by trainer Kenny McPeek, who employed Albarado as an exercise rider.

Saying goodbye to someone who left us too soon is extremely difficult, stated Mike Anderson, president of Churchill Downs. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and numerous friends.

Albarado gained widespread recognition for his achievements with Curlin, riding to victory in both the Preakness Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2007. He also rode the filly Swiss Skydiver to success in the Preakness in 2020. His career includes two additional Breeders’ Cup wins, contributing to his total of 5,222 victories.

After retiring in 2022, Albarado worked with McPeek, who previously trained Swiss Skydiver. Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, Albarado’s career began at bush tracks before advancing to professional circuits, where he competed in over 34,000 races. Throughout his career, he amassed earnings exceeding $221 million.
