Former Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin Praises Myles Garrett as NFL’s Best Player

3 weeks ago 0

A Super Bowl-winning coach with nearly two decades at a storied franchise has revealed his pick for the best overall player in football—a former division rival.

Mike Tomlin, who led the Pittsburgh Steelers for 19 years and claimed victory in Super Bowl XLIII, is now working in broadcasting. This role allows him to publicly share his opinions and insights.

During an appearance on Pro Football Focus’ “NFL Show,” Tomlin identified Myles Garrett, the ex-Cleveland Brown now playing as a pass rusher for the Los Angeles Rams, as the “best damn player in football.” Tomlin has firsthand experience, as his Steelers faced the Browns twice each season as AFC North competitors.

Tomlin commended Garrett for setting the NFL record for sacks in a single season with 23 in 2025. He described it as a historic achievement, especially given the circumstances where sacks are typically rare.

“In the fourth quarter of football games, man, they were behind. Teams were running the football and this guy broke the NFL sack record,” Tomlin noted. He emphasized how Garrett’s move to the Rams makes them formidable contenders for the Super Bowl.

Tomlin explained that Garrett’s contribution to such a strong team is significant. As the Rams often lead games, opponents are forced to pass more frequently, enhancing Garrett’s chances to excel. “That’s where legacy is made,” Tomlin added.

Now playing alongside future Hall of Fame defensive lineman Aaron Donald, Garrett is poised to further enhance his already impressive legacy. The Rams boast a powerful offense led by reigning MVP Matthew Stafford and star receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. Their ability to score often places opponents in passing situations, providing ample “money moments” for Garrett.

Fans will witness Garrett’s debut as a Ram on Thursday night, as Los Angeles takes on the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. Although Donald will miss this initial game, he is expected to return for the Week 2 clash against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.
