Authorities have charged a former college swimmer from California with second-degree murder following an incident in Maui, Hawaii. Legend Storer, 20, faces charges related to the death of Michael “Mike” Dyer, a security guard found dead on August 5. Court records indicate that Storer is also charged with first-degree burglary and indecent exposure.
The Maui Police Department reported that the sequence of events began at approximately 1:45 a.m. when surveillance cameras recorded a naked man near Dyer’s office at a condominium resort on Lower Honoapiʻilani Road, Lahaina. The man reportedly attacked Dyer before fleeing the scene.
About an hour later, at 3:02 a.m., police were alerted to a nude man seen in the Kahana neighborhood. Officers located the 20-year-old at around 3:35 a.m., observing several abrasions on him. They transported him to Maui Memorial Medical Center for assessment.
At approximately 5:31 a.m., authorities were called back to the resort where Dyer was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead. Surveillance footage analysis confirmed the wandering man in Kahana was the same individual from the resort footage.
The Maui Police Department has not officially released the suspect’s name, citing a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling. However, court documents identify Storer as the accused facing charges related to this occurrence.
During Storer’s initial court hearing, a request from his attorney for nominal bail was denied. Prosecutors succeeded in having him held without bail, as indicated by reviewed court records.
Mike Dyer, who worked as a security guard for Sands of Kahana, was married for 26 years. A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated by friends and family of his wife, Joy, to support them during this period.
Storer’s background includes a history as a competitive breaststroke and sprint swimmer for Concordia University Irvine, according to the athletics website. He graduated from Maui Preparatory Academy and is recognized as a winner in the Maui Interscholastic League. Reports suggest that Storer has left Concordia since the alleged events.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing according to the Maui police.
