California Governor Gavin Newsom is looking to former President Bill Clinton as a source of political inspiration amid speculation surrounding his possible bid for the presidency in 2028. Newsom recently shared his willingness to engage in tough battles and recover from political challenges, a perspective he detailed in an interview with Vanity Fair.
During this conversation, Newsom named Clinton as his political model, describing the former president as a “master of his craft.” Newsom admires Clinton’s ability to address political obstacles effectively.
“I watch videos of Clinton. I seek his counsel, his advice,” Newsom told Vanity Fair. He disclosed that he frequently consults Clinton on various issues, emphasizing the personal relationship they have developed.
Newsom called Clinton late at night to discuss policy and strategy, attributing his appeal to Clinton’s problem-solving skills. Despite Clinton’s controversial past, Newsom regards him as an exceptional leader.
“No greater problem solver in that respect than Bill Clinton, in my mind. Master of his craft,”
Newsom’s admiration for Clinton coincides with a changing Democratic Party landscape, where socialist figures are gaining attention alongside Clinton’s earlier moderate approach.
The governor positions himself as a “disrupter,” distancing himself from the traditional Democratic establishment. Newsom sees himself as taking uncommon risks and challenging expectations.
During a book tour event, Newsom shared insight into his upcoming policy ideas laid out in his project entitled Project 2029. These ideas cover topics ranging from zoning reform to industrial decarbonization.
Democratic strategist Doug Friednash commended Newsom’s approach of adopting Clinton’s strategies, cautioning that shifting further left could negatively impact the Democratic nominee’s broader appeal.
Another strategist, Kaivan Shroff, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of balancing progressive policies with broader public appeal to ensure political success without alienating moderate voters.
Newsom faces the challenge of presenting himself as a genuine disrupter despite his extensive political experience, an undertaking that will be crucial for his potential future candidacy.
