GOP Races to Replace Senator Lindsey Graham in South Carolina

Mark Bednar, former communications director for Kevin McCarthy, recently addressed the urgent political efforts to replace Senator Lindsey Graham in South Carolina. He stressed the importance of President Donald Trump and Governor Henry McMaster swiftly coordinating an interim appointment while supporting a strong Republican candidate in the upcoming special election.

Potential candidates for the seat include Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette and Representative Russell Fry. Bednar warned against internal conflicts within the GOP during this period.

President Trump hinted at his preferred long-term replacement for the late Senator Graham as the special election quickly approaches. Both private and public efforts have intensified to secure Trump’s influential endorsement, with the election scheduled for August 11. Several lawmakers have already shown interest in joining the race.

In a recent statement, Trump indicated Representative Russell Fry, R-S.C., might be among his favorites. Trump praised Fry as an outstanding young congressman during a Newsmax interview, suggesting his potential candidacy.

Trump initially supported Fry in his inaugural congressional campaign in 2022, where Fry defeated former Representative Tom Rice, R-S.C., in the primary. Rice was one of the House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump following the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021.

Trump remarked on Fry’s popularity and performance, deeming him a notable candidate. Politico reported Fry’s communications with the White House about his possible candidacy, which positions him as a top contender for Trump’s endorsement. Fox News Digital has not confirmed if Fry is being considered for the election.

In the interim, Trump endorsed Graham’s sister, Senator-designate Darline Graham, to fill the senate seat temporarily. Governor McMaster appointed her on Monday, with her swearing-in scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

Trump stated that Darline Graham would serve on an interim basis. Representatives Nancy Mace, R-S.C., and Ralph Norman, R-S.C., have also expressed interest in the race, with Norman specifically seeking Trump’s endorsement.

Mace and Norman previously failed to secure the GOP nomination for governor, a position ultimately won by South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, who defeated Trump-backed Lieutenant Governor Pam Evette.
