Gordie Howe Bridge Faces Delay Amid U.S.-Canada Politics

The Gordie Howe Bridge, named after the legendary Canadian-born hockey player, remains unopened despite being completed. This bridge connects Detroit, Michigan, with Windsor, Ontario, across the Detroit River. It is poised to play a crucial role in one of North America’s busiest land crossings.

Millions of trucks cross this area annually, transporting car parts, machinery, and various other commodities. The construction began in 2018 with the intention of opening earlier this year. However, political tensions have intervened.

The project’s delay began when former President Donald Trump used social media to demand joint ownership between Canada and the United States, halting the bridge’s inauguration. Despite Canadian and Michigan officials initially scheduling an opening event in June, it was canceled at the last moment.

Stephen Laskowski, President of the Canadian Trucking Alliance and head of the Ontario Trucking Association, shared his experience of receiving a call to inform him of the cancellation. He recounted, “I was heading out. My wife said, ‘Your phone’s ringing’ … it said, don’t bother going.”

Canada financed the construction costs, with a plan to share toll revenues with Michigan once expenses are recouped. Trump’s stance suggests this arrangement falls short. Canadian politicians suspect that the delay may be influenced by owners of the Ambassador Bridge, a rival crossing operated by the Moroun family. Notably, the Moroun family has financially supported Republicans, including a $1 million donation to a super PAC aligned with Trump.
