Houston Shooting Sparks Criticism

Abbott’s remarks followed another immigrant’s fatal shooting by an ICE agent. Colombian Joan Sebastian Durán Guerrero was shot in his car in Biddeford, Maine, further prompting calls for a review of ICE conduct.

The White House and ICE have been contacted for comments, while ICE stated that the firearm discharge would undergo investigation.

Background on the Shooting

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, was driving with three others in Houston when ICE agents pursued them. Footage captured the van’s pursuit, showing it make a U-turn and followed by agents.

According to DHS, Salgado attempted to evade arrest, allegedly ramming an ICE vehicle and trying to run over an officer. These actions resulted in the officer firing in self-defense.

Officers at the scene lacked body cameras, leaving distant video footage from local businesses as the primary evidence.

Salgado had lived in the U.S. for 35 years and was not an intended target. His family shared memories of him as a hardworking man, invested in family values and education.
