Cybersecurity expert Kurt Knutsson highlights public concerns regarding the expansion of artificial intelligence data centers. According to a Fox News poll, 70% of Americans oppose these facilities. He argues that modern data centers are clean and have minimal impact on local water and electricity resources. Knutsson emphasizes transparent communication as vital for communities to understand the facilities’ benefits, essential for maintaining AI leadership against global competitors.
America’s biggest obstacle in the technology race with China might not be Beijing, but the opposition to new data centers and the energy needed for them. Shyam Sankar, Palantir’s chief technology officer, suggests that power issues and backlash against data centers are significant risks. Sankar warns that the U.S. might hinder its own progress more than falling behind China. According to him, resisting AI could threaten the prosperity it promises to generate.
“The proximate issues are definitely going to be power and backlash against data centers,” Shyam Sankar said in an interview with Fox News Digital.
The global competition in AI involves significant investments from the U.S. and China, aiming for economic growth and geopolitical influence. Success depends on extensive development of data centers and infrastructure. Yet, these projects face increasing resistance from communities worried about electricity demand, water use, and weighing benefits against costs. Companies are rapidly building data centers, causing local opposition and affecting political campaigns.
Some residents are concerned about electricity demand, water consumption, noise, and traffic. Utility customers question if they will bear the cost of expanding the power grid. Some projects face delays or cancellations. Lawmakers in several states have proposed restrictions or moratoriums on new facilities. Developers are responding by combining new data centers with dedicated power sources rather than relying solely on the electric grid.
Sankar argues that debates over data centers risk slowing industrial benefits. He provides an example where a submarine-parts manufacturer reduced production planning from two weeks to less than an hour, allowing them to add a third shift. Despite its role, AI’s contribution to job creation remains unnoticed by many workers.
The American Builder Summit sought to address fears that AI might replace jobs. Rather than showcasing cutting-edge AI models, Palantir featured factory workers, healthcare workers, and military personnel demonstrating AI solutions built for workplace challenges. Sankar criticizes the AI industry for fixating on artificial general intelligence (AGI) instead of deploying current AI systems across the economy.
“The AI we have is powerful enough that it should have created more prosperity and value,” he said. “The only reason it hasn’t yet is not a failing of the technology, it’s a lack of our national will to push and invest in diffusing the technology through our economy.”
AGI refers to theoretical systems capable of performing a wide range of tasks at human level or beyond. Sankar compares today’s AI moment with the early days of electricity, where technology exists, but businesses have yet to adapt fully. He urges that AI should enhance productivity rather than be feared as a job replacer. Many workers still worry about the future of their employment in the AI era. Sankar argues that firsthand AI experiences contrast with widespread fear fueled by social media.
