Health Secretary Moves to Restart Vaccine Advisory Panel Amid Legal Dispute

The health secretary is taking steps to resume the activities of a government advisory panel on vaccines following a court intervention that halted its meetings and decisions.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Health Secretary, reshuffled the vaccine advisory committee last June, dismissing all 17 members and replacing them with individuals skeptical of vaccines. This action followed a House hearing in April where Kennedy’s stance on vaccines was highlighted.

The Trump administration is now seeking to expedite an appeal against a federal court ruling that stopped certain decisions by Kennedy. These included the withdrawal of standard recommendations for immunizations against various childhood diseases. Kennedy announced on social media that the administration had filed for an expedited appeal, aiming for the vaccine advisers to gather and decide on recommendations before the upcoming flu season.

This move comes amidst a lawsuit from six medical organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics. The plaintiffs argue that Kennedy’s changes to the childhood vaccine schedule and his appointees to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are “arbitrary and capricious”. They claim that these appointees lack the necessary qualifications to make vaccination recommendations, potentially endangering public health.

A federal judge in Massachusetts issued a ruling on March 16 that temporarily halted Kennedy’s vaccine policies while the trial progressed. Additionally, the judge froze decisions made by Kennedy’s appointed panelists and suspended upcoming meetings.

President Trump had also taken action to align C.D.C. recommendations with those of other nations. Furthermore, Kennedy’s office has reinstated the advisory committee’s charter, indicating efforts to continue its work.
