To prevent ingrown nails, cut nails straight across, then smooth edges with a glass or crystal file. Avoid cardboard files that can lead to breaks and splits. Additionally, stop biting nails to prevent infections and nail discoloration.
Buff Sparingly
Light buffing can enhance nail growth and shine, but overdoing it thins and weakens nails.
Moisturize Nails and Skin
Moisturize nails and surrounding skin to prevent dryness and cracks. Bankole recommends using cuticle oil, preferably with grapeseed oil, vitamin E, lemongrass, and jojoba oil. Any skin-safe oil works effectively, even olive oil. For hands, use moisturizing cream rather than lotion for longer-lasting hydration.
Take Breaks From Treatments
Frequent manicures can harm nails due to acetone-based removers and constant polish use on toenails can stain them. Hard gels and acrylics might weaken nails over time. Let your natural nails breathe, and monitor them for any color or texture changes.
Protect Nails From Moisture
Nails absorb water much more than skin. Avoid causing them to expand and contract by wearing gloves during wet tasks like dishwashing.
