Hegseth Denies Presidential Run Rumors Amid 2028 Speculation

1 month ago 0

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has firmly rejected claims that he is considering a presidential run in 2028, calling the reports “100% false” after NBC News suggested he discussed a potential campaign with close allies. Hegseth criticized the network for relying on anonymous sources, despite being informed of the report’s inaccuracy. “My only job: Make @DeptofWar Great Again,” he stated on social media.

Growing Speculation Over 2028 Presidential Field

Speculation surrounding the 2028 Republican presidential candidates continues to rise. Among those discussed are Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Other names include Donald Trump Jr. and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

NBC News reported that Hegseth had mentioned a potential run for president to close friends and allies. He and his wife, Jennifer, reportedly see his appeal among Trump’s MAGA base as a compelling factor in launching a campaign. Hegseth’s appearance at the Iowa State Fair, a key early presidential campaigning locale, added fuel to these speculations.

Despite this, Hegseth’s supporters refute the report. Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated, “Secretary Hegseth is not running for President, and his main priority is leading the War Department.” White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly also acknowledged his past performance under Trump.

Challenges and Controversies

If Hegseth seeks the presidency, he may face significant challenges. The ongoing war in Iran remains unpopular amid rising gasoline prices. Hegseth has faced controversy surrounding discussions of military actions on Yemen, labeled as the ‘Signalgate’ scandal due to the use of the app Signal. The NBC News report also highlighted these issues.

Additionally, Trump’s ongoing influence in the Republican Party is significant for any prospective candidates, as the party starts to consider the post-Trump political era.

Current Polling Landscape

Early polls suggest Hegseth’s potential candidacy may face tough competition. A Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) straw poll indicated JD Vance with 53% support, and Marco Rubio at 35%. Hegseth received a mere 1% support. Nationally, Vance, Rubio, and Trump Jr. are polling ahead of other candidates.

An Echelon Insights poll indicated Vance leading with 39%, compared to Rubio’s 22%, with DeSantis at 10% and Trump Jr. at 8%. Another survey by Emerson College Polling showed Vance with 39% backed by likely voters, while Rubio followed closely with 38%.
