The Revival of the Kansas vs. Missouri Football Rivalry

3 weeks ago 0

College football rivalries have a unique charm. One rivalry making a return is the clash between Kansas and Missouri, two teams with a storied history. Dating back to 1891, the rivalry, originally named the Border War, is now called the Border Showdown. The match-up returns with a promise to reignite the old animosities that defined it.

The Missouri Tigers and the Kansas Jayhawks were last in the headlines for their intense rivalry years ago. A recent social media hype video stoked the flames, but it crossed some lines. The video took aim at Missouri’s historical stance as a slave state, a reference that sparked controversy.

Kansas’s tactics brought forth criticism. Targeting a whole institution for past associations seems misplaced. Notably, the players in question, including those in the video, are not linked to past eras. Many of Missouri’s current team members, including those of black descent, commit to the Tigers for athletic reasons, not historical alignments.

An interesting twist in the video involved the music track. The chosen song, “Superhero (Heroes & Villains),” was produced by Metro Boomin, a musician from Missouri. Using this work adds an ironic layer to the promotional efforts.

This rivalry revival reminds fans of the passion inherent in college football. Yet, as intense as rivalries are, maintaining respect is crucial. The anticipation for Friday’s game builds, but there should be a focus on friendly competition rather than divisive rhetoric.
