A House Democrat claimed a Republican opponent was ‘enjoying the good life’ using donor money, pointing to her campaign’s Disney World expenses. However, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, a Democrat from Texas, has spent nearly $20,000 on domestic and international trips, including a visit to Disney World, luxury hotels in the UAE, and a Michelin-starred restaurant in Zurich.
Accusations and Counterclaims
In October 2025, Gonzalez criticized Republican Mayra Flores for allegedly using campaign funds for a family trip to Disney World. This followed his own social media posts from a Disney trip in April, which included photos and coincided with his campaign spending over $1,100 at the Florida resort.
Federal campaign finance records highlight two separate payments of $561.38 each to Walt Disney Resorts by Gonzalez’s campaign in March and May 2025. Gonzalez’s campaign manager, Alex Philley, defended the expenditures as related to a critical Financial Services trip.
Travel Spending Examined
Gonzalez’s travel expenses have raised questions. A 2024 trip to the UAE, reportedly tied to campaign activities, cost over $13,000. Gonzalez’s Facebook posts portrayed this as an ‘after campaign break,’ with images of the congressman and his wife sightseeing.
The campaign’s filings also document expenses for a 2019 trip to Morocco under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act. Gonzalez’s campaign covered nearly $4,800 for his wife’s travel. Another notable trip included a costly stay in a luxury Abu Dhabi hotel in December 2024, recorded as CODEL expenses.
Campaign Finance Regulations
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) rules permit campaign funds for trips involving official duties. They also allow covering expenses for spouses if directly related to campaign activities. However, personal vacations or unrelated family expenses cannot be funded by campaign finances.
Gonzalez’s campaign asserts that their spending is legal and transparent, with disclosures coming directly from FEC filings. They argue that voters are more concerned with rising costs under Trump’s policies, which Republican challenger Eric Flores supports.
Other Campaign Expenditures
Gonzalez’s campaign has also documented spending at various high-end locations within the U.S. This includes significant amounts at The Capital Grille in Washington D.C., Eddie V’s Prime Seafood in Houston, and expensive D.C. restaurants.
Recent expenditures include a $1,019 payment at the Ojai Valley Inn in California and over $1,400 at the Omni Bedford Springs Resort & Spa in Pennsylvania. Both locations are noted for luxury accommodations and amenities.
