House Task Force Probes Birth Tourism Companies

Rep. Brandon Gill, a Texas Republican and chair of the House Oversight Committee’s Task Force on Defending Constitutional Rights, is investigating companies involved in birth tourism. These firms help foreign nationals travel to the U.S. to give birth, enabling their children to gain American citizenship. Gill’s task force has issued subpoenas to several ‘birth tourism companies’ to scrutinize their practices.

According to Gill, current laws make birth tourism illegal in the U.S. He argues that businesses facilitating these activities, including falsifying immigration or visa forms, are part of a criminal conspiracy.

The U.S. State Department prevents foreign nationals from obtaining visitor visas if their primary goal is to give birth in the country. The task force ramped up its efforts following a billboard seen in July promoting birth services at a Texas hospital near the Mexican border. The hospital advertised prices for childbirth and caesarean sections on a now-defunct website.

The investigation includes operations in Miami and other parts of the U.S. Gill describes birth tourism as an abuse of U.S. immigration and emphasizes that birthright citizenship was originally meant for former slaves and their descendants. He attributes the current misuse to foreign nationals crossing the border for the sole purpose of having children in America.

Senator Jim Banks, a Republican from Indiana, is introducing legislation that aligns with Trump’s executive order on deeming the immigration situation an ‘invasion.’ The 1898 Wong Kim Ark case is cited, which exempts certain groups from automatic citizenship.

Gill supports clarifying U.S. laws to safeguard American children’s birthright citizenship. His goal is to curb foreigners who have babies in America and then leverage these births for benefits like jobs and welfare.

Mission Regional Medical Center in Texas denies promoting illegal activities with their maternity services. Their campaign returned limited results, mainly because the target community often lacks insurance and has restricted access to prenatal care.

According to a hospital spokesperson, almost all surveyed patients were legal U.S. residents or citizens. The hospital, operating since 1954, stresses its commitment to lawful operations and serving the local community.

Rep. James Comer, chair of the Oversight Committee, emphasizes that birth tourism should not flourish in the U.S. He asserts that manipulating immigration laws is unlawful. After the Supreme Court’s decision on June 30 to nullify Trump’s executive order, Justice Brett Kavanaugh noted that legislative action remains viable. Lawmakers like Gill plan to restrict birthright citizenship through new laws.
