A trial is set to begin in England for a man accused of raping and sexually abusing his wife, along with a dozen other men implicated in the case. The accused, who is in his 60s and from Stockport, northwest England, allegedly conspired with others to drug and rape his wife while she was unconscious. This was disclosed by British police in June. The trial will be held in Manchester, and legal restrictions prevent naming the man to protect his wife’s anonymity.
According to CBS News partner BBC News, the man faces 48 charges. Initially denying all accusations, he later pleaded guilty to 15 charges. These include five counts of rape, three of sexual assault, six counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sharing intimate photos or film, as stated by Greater Manchester police officials. However, he continues to deny 11 counts of rape, two of attempted rape, seven of assault by penetration, four of sexual assault, four of conspiracy to rape, three of conspiracy to assault by penetration, and charges related to administering substances with intent.
The other men in the trial allegedly committed offenses from sexually abusing the victim to helping administer substances to make her unconscious, thus facilitating further abuse. Prosecutors reported to CBS News that the men’s ages range from 28 to 73 years old.
This case has similarities to that of Gisèle Pelicot from France. Pelicot became known worldwide when she testified publicly against her ex-husband and numerous other men in a 2024 mass rape trial. She chose to waive her right to anonymity for the 4-month trial against her ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, and 51 men accused of raping her over nearly a decade at Dominique’s invitation. All defendants were found guilty, and Dominique received the maximum sentence of 20 years.
